The third step in sin’s progressive work is in gaining the full and total consent of the will unto the actual commission of sin leading to death (Jm 1:15). This is given as the reason for the Northern Kingdom of Israel’s destruction by the Assyrian Empire in 722 B.C., “And they rejected His statutes and His covenant which He made with their fathers, and His warnings with which He warned them” (2 Kgs 17:15). It is the incremental and progressive nature of indwelling sin which makes it so successful in enslaving people and ruling over their hearts and minds. It takes one step to gain another. If one path is obstructed by some barrier, it takes another route so that little by little, step by step, it accomplishes its ultimate goal, which is the conception and commission of actual sin leading to death.
