The deceiving of souls may be compared to the modern equivalent of the con-artist, namely, the scammer. Those who are aware of their danger and vulnerability to being scammed will take all the necessary precautions to prevent it; so will the person who is much afraid of being spiritually deceived. It was a saying of Martin Luther, “Whom God intends to destroy, He gives them leave to play with Scripture.” The implications of this statement for the mass of professing Christianity today which does little else than play, toy, dabble, and tinker with Scripture in an attempt to mold and shape it to their own lusts, preferences, and presuppositions, deny its clear message and doctrines, give new meanings to old truths, and to justify their self-centered, worldly, and often heretical beliefs, practices, and lifestyles, is frightening.
